Gretchen Whitmer’s office handed legislators her proposed budget Wednesday, laying out how it thinks the state should spend $83.5 billion in the next fiscal year. The proposed budget would include a $15.3 billion general fund and a $21.2 billion school aid budget, the governor’s office says. It would add $50 million each into the state’s rainy day fund and the school rainy day fund.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson is making a bid for the Michigan governor’s office. The high-profile sheriff, a Democrat, was first elected in 2020. He gained national attention that year for marching with protesters. He was invited to speak at the Democratic National Convention in August. In an interview today at the WOOD TV8 studios, Swanson said it is time for a different type of candidate.
