NEW HAVEN - The operator of the Omni New Haven Hotel has sued the city in federal court, alleging municipal officials have failed to maintain a garage tunnel running beneath the building at 155 Temple Street. "Structural beams have deteriorated to a point that jeopardizes the structural integrity of portions of the hotel improvements on the Hotel Property," an attorney for New Haven Tenant, LLC alleged in a U.S. District Court lawsuit filed last July.

WEST HAVEN - The City Council voted to expand eligibility for a tax relief program targeted to elderly homeowners. For several years, the city has offered a program to freeze the city's portion of residents' tax payments provided they are 70 or older, earn below $50,000 for married applicants and $35,000 for a single applicant annually excluding Social Security payments and have been a resident for 20 consecutive years or longer.

NEW HAVEN - Four terminated police department employees, including a former sergeant, have been reinstated to the department since last Monday. According to a city personnel report, Sgt. Shayna Kendall was reinstated to her job on April 28 with annual pay of $51,540, more than two years after a state arbitration panel ruled that a one-day suspension - not termination - was an appropriate punishment for reportedly lying about an off-duty traffic stop in July 2021.

The council's $187.1 million budget, which was approved by an 11-2 vote along party lines Thursday, heads to the Municipal Accountability Review Board for final approval. The tax rate approved by the council - 25.58 mills - is a roughly 11-mill decrease from the 36.57 mill tax rate in the current fiscal year, where one mill equals $1 per $1,000 of assessed property value owed in taxes.
