A 24-year-old University of Delaware graduate student killed after a fleeing U-Haul van sped down Newark's Main Street, plowing into a handful of people and cars, has been identified by city police as Marina Vasconcelos. Vasconcelos, of Northeast, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene after police said she was hit on April 29 by a stolen van that was driven by Gordon Turner. The 22-year-old New Castle man is facing several crimes, including two counts of second-degree attempted murder.

This year marks a milestone. Come June, it will be 10 years since I first arrived at The News Journal, a young reporter ready to dive into all that Delaware had to offer. At the time, for a nightside breaking news reporter, that meant shooting scenes, car crashes and police news − a little bit of everything. What I couldn't have expected was all the people that "breaking news" would introduce me to, opening the doors to telling their stories.

A brush fire along the train tracks in Wilmington is sending plumes of smoke over I-495 near the East 12th Street exit late in the afternoon of April 15. It appears exit ramps to this area of the city have been closed to vehicles traveling on the interstate. Flames could be seen shooting from the brushy area that borders the Brandywine and butts up against train tracks that run through the area. The cause of the fire and where it originated were not immediately clear. This is a developing story.
