Garner, who spent a quarter century with Decatur City Schools and has been a regular volunteer with the center for the past 10 years, wasn’t discouraged. She oinked like a pig. Vargas laughed.

By Bruce McLellan | Living 50 PlusFlying north from Hartselle toward Decatur in his hot-air balloon decorated with strips of bright colors, Brian Dial found himself in a jam. A relatively new balloon pilot at the time, he wanted to land before his flight got too long. But as he hovered over woods near Flint, there were no large openings for a landing. “We had been flying for a while, and this was our second landing attempt,” Dial said.

Like many children, Cameron Parker loved playing in the sandbox with heavy equipment toys. “Big machines, dirt flying in the air, it’s just cool for any age,” he said. And only half-jokingly, he added, “I guess I just never grew out of it.”Although only 26, Parker now manages his own fleet of heavy equipment as the owner of JB&L Civil Contracting.

In the latter part of Kim Weems Bell’s junior year at Decatur High in 1988, the school announced that a meeting would be held for anyone interested in joining the school’s Key Club. More significantly, the announcement said female students would be allowed as full members for the first time. Bell decided to join and was elected treasurer, becoming the first female officer in the Decatur High Key Club’s history. She said she wasn’t trying to be a trailblazer.
