As of September 30, 2006, it had an average daily circulation of 20,824 and a Sunday circulation of 23,840. It is one of only two family-owned daily newspapers still operating in Alabama, alongside The Anniston Star.

    The Wilson Dam lock-gate repair project has been delayed, and local industries will have to continue contending with massive barge backlogs until the lock is fixed in early July. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Tuesday said in a press release that the schedule shift is due to a combination of weather delays, technical challenges and the sequencing of critical tasks. The release says these factors have resulted in a three-week delay beyond an earlier mid-June estimate.

    The city is moving forward with the engineering on the second phase of the Church Street Northeast reconstruction. The City Council recently hired Garver Engineering to do the engineering and design on the reconstruction of the portion of Church Street between Sixth Avenue and Somerville Road for an estimated fee of $115,118. The agreement with Garver says the company will do a corridor study, field surveys and roadway plans for this 0.7 of a mile portion of Church Street.

    The Decatur City Council agreed Monday to “move forward with the process” with the only candidate they’ve interviewed for police chief. The council instructed Human Resources Director Richelle Sandlin to begin a background check on Birmingham Police Department Capt. Torry Mack. Council President Jacob Ladner said a good result could lead to the city offering the police chief job to Mack. “They will then go forward with offering a contract as part of the process,” Ladner said.
