PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Chris Sale became the fastest pitcher to reach 2,500 strikeouts, pitched six scoreless innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-3 on Thursday night to split a doubleheader. The Phillies won the afternoon game 5-4. Sale (3-3) struck out Edmundo Sosa in the sixth inning for his eighth strikeout, to reach the milestone. He did it in 2,026 innings, surpassing the record of 2,107 2/3 set by Randy Johnson.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Atlanta rookie right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver left Thursday’s 5–4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in a doubleheader opener with a strained right elbow, appearing to say “pop” toward manager Brian Snitker after a third-inning pitch to Trea Turner. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up a go-ahead, two-run homer to Rafael Marchán, then took a 96.6 mph line drive off his right ankle on a a ball hit by Bryson Stott with one out.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Ella Parker hit a three-run, walk-off homer to lift Oklahoma to a 4-3 win over Tennessee on Thursday in the Women’s College World Series opener for both teams. Parker’s second homer of the game off Tennessee ace Karlyn Pickens came with two outs and strengthened the Sooners’ chances of winning a fifth straight national title. “I wasn’t trying to make any moment too big,” Parker said.

Tennessee’s Sept. 6 home opener against ETSU will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+/SEC Network+. In addition, the Volunteers’ SEC opener versus Georgia on Sept. 13 in Neyland Stadium will begin at 3:30 p.m. on ABC.
