Officials at the London Food Bank say they’re expecting recession-like demand during this year’s Spring Food Drive. The 38th annual event was launched Thursday. Co-Director Glen Pearson said the trade war with the U.S. has many anxious about their future employment. “It’s all about the unknown, that’s true everywhere in the economy. But people need to know that food banks were in real trouble for the last three years. Now that tariffs are coming it’s going to be really hard.

A longstanding eyesore in east London is getting a makeover and fulfilling a community need at the same time. Dignitaries broke ground Thursday on a new long term care home located behind the former McCormick cookie and candy factory on Dundas Street. “I get my own room,” said an excited Sharon Winslade. The senior will be among the first residents at the new Extendicare long term care home on Ashland Avenue.

The leader of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) says if elected, his government would place a moratorium on new permanent residents to Canada, including those married to Canadians. “The moratorium is, yes, it’s for everybody. Everybody who wanted to come to our country. Now, we will stop that, we will have that moratorium,” said Maxime Bernier while speaking in London Wednesday outside the government of Canada Citizenship and Immigration office in London.

London police will no longer turn a blind eye to those using illegal drugs in public places. That pledge was made Tuesday by Chief Thai Truong as the police service outlined its new strategy for addressing open air substance use. “It has not been getting better, it has been getting worse, so we need to pivot,” said Truong, who was joined by Mayor Josh Morgan and a number of representatives working in harm reduction and mental health services.
