The Finance Minister and Dublin TD is two points clear of his party head and Wicklow counterpart on 27 per cent, a Sunday Independent / Ireland Thinks poll found. However, only seven per cent would like to see Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill heading up Fine Gael, meaning it is very much a two-horse race for the party’s premiership.

TAILBACKS formed on a major Irish motorway this evening after clothes were left strewn on the road. Vehicles had to manoeuvre around the items, which were spread out on a line on the left-hand side of the M2 in Antrim, Northern Ireland. The PSNI said the incident occurred after a lorry shed its load. And what it dumped was reportedly clothing, which spread out over the road. Police received reports of the incident around 5.20pm this evening.

A MOTORCYCLIST has died in a crash involving a car this evening - one of four separate road smashes in the past day. Emergency services rushed to the scene of the collision, at the intersection of R521 and R523 in Ardagh village, Co Limerick, shortly after 6pm today. The motorcyclist, a man aged in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to University Hospital Limerick, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course, gardai said.
