Firefighters discover fatally-shot victim in The Commons apartment blaze

Gainesville Fire Rescue firefighters discovered a deceased person with a gunshot wound when they responded to an apartment fire at The Commons on Monday afternoon. According to Gainesville Police Department (GPD) spokesperson Art Forgey, the fire was reported at 1:40 p.m. at 2001 SW 16th St. When firefighters entered the apartment to extinguish the fire, they located the deceased victim with a gunshot wound, along with a firearm.
Gas prices rise slightly heading into Memorial Day weekend

With Memorial Day weekend approaching, gas prices have risen two cents per gallon in the Gainesville area. According to Thursday’s weekly AAA gas report, prices in the Gainesville area increased from $3.14 last week to $3.17, while the average price per gallon in Florida remained the same at $3.12. The national price also stayed flat at $3.19. AAA reports that a record number of drivers plan to travel 50 or more miles away from home over Memorial Day weekend.
Gainesville police arrest voyeurism suspect

Gainesville police arrested Zachery Andrew Kipple on Wednesday night on charges of stalking, indecent exposure and voyeurism after asking for the public’s help identifying him earlier that day. According to an arrest report, Kipple, 24, was seen by separate female victims in April watching them through windows.
Kanapaha Middle School student arrested after mass shooting threats

A 14-year-old Kanapaha Middle School student in Gainesville was arrested Monday after posting two separate threats on social media to shoot and kill students last week. According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) release, deputies arrested a 14-year-old male suspect at Kanapaha Middle School on Monday and charged him with two felony counts of Written/Electronic Threat of a Mass Shooting/Terrorism Act.
Gas prices fall as summer driving season approaches

The average cost per gallon of gas in the Gainesville area dropped seven cents from last week. According to Thursday’s weekly AAA gas report, prices fell from $3.18 last week to $3.11, while the average price per gallon in Florida decreased from $3.17 to $2.99. The national price dipped from $3.18 to $3.15. The gas demand has slid in the past week during the lull between spring and summer travel.
Butler Plaza Walmart shooting injures 1, suspect surrenders himself to police

A suspect surrendered to law enforcement after a shooting at the Butler Plaza Walmart in Gainesville injured a person on Wednesday night. According to Gainesville Police Department (GPD) and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) releases, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. at 2900 SW 42nd St.GPD officers and ACSO deputies responded and secured the scene while providing medical care to the victim and evacuating customers and employees.
Newberry promotes Jason Lyman to fire chief

The city of Newberry promoted Deputy Fire Chief Jason Lyman to fire chief on Monday. In a Newberry press release, Senior Lt. Kevin Farr was also promoted to the role of deputy chief, where he will assist Lyman in his duties when absent. The announcement comes two months after former Newberry Fire Chief Mike Vogel was arrested for driving under the influence and later resigned from his position. Lyman was elevated to interim fire chief after Vogel’s February resignation.
Victim from Easter shooting at TB McPherson Park dies

A woman shot at the Easter event at TB McPherson Park died on Friday. According to a Chestnut Funeral Home post on social media, 20-year-old Ontaria Baisden, one of three people shot on April 20 at an Easter egg hunt, succumbed to her injuries. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on April 20 when a Black man wearing red shorts and a gray hoodie shot three people at the event where more than 1,000 people gathered.
The Amazing Give 2025 generates over $1.1M for local nonprofit organizations

On Thursday, The Amazing Give 2025 fundraiser generated more than $1.1 million on over 6,200 gifts directed to 118 nonprofit organizations in the Gainesville area. As of Friday, this year’s 12-hour online event to raise money for local nonprofits raised $1,158,124 and, according to The Amazing Give website, donations will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 28.
Lake City man involved in Easter celebration shooting arrested

Law enforcement arrested a Lake City man Thursday on charges related to Sunday’s Easter celebration shooting that injured a Lake City police officer at the Annie Mattox Recreation Center. According to a Lake City Police Department (LCPD) release sent Friday morning, law enforcement arrested Justin Le’on Claridy, 25, who had just been released from prison last week, on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
