    World War II veteran Duane Stevenson got teary-eyed as students at Prairie Point Elementary School in Oswego sang patriotic songs as part of a Veterans Day assembly Friday morning. The St. Charles resident will turn 100 on Saturday, which is Veterans Day. Stevenson, who grew up in Elmhurst, is the grandfather of Prairie Point sign language interpreter Melissa Martin. “I really appreciated it,” Stevenson said after the assembly. Stevenson was drafted into the U.S. Army when he was 19 years old.

    As the starting left tackle on Iowa Western Community College’s offensive line, Luke Eckardt is used to being on the move. “We run a lot of gap scheme stuff, so you’ve got to be able to move,” said Eckardt, a Richmond-Burton graduate. “I’m able to use my hands and move my feet. Plus, I’ve got good arm length. Those pair well together.”Moving is something Eckardt has done plenty of in his college career, especially off the field.

    Wheaton City Council members are on the verge of rejecting a developer’s plan to convert a pair of brick office buildings into apartments near a major gateway into downtown. Developer Henry Che proposed the office-to-residential conversion project at the southwest corner of Main Street and Roosevelt Road. The development would contain eight apartments in each building for a total of 16 units.

    DeKALB – Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance opened its next production, the comedy play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Friday. The play will run through Nov. 18, according to a news release. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” originally written by William Shakespeare, focuses on various stories connected by Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding. The stories include four young lovers and a group of actors rehearsing for the wedding.
