MERCER — There’s no curtain to lift on the Hendley Hoge Bandstand on the Mercer County Courthouse lawn, but there is a stage, and Friday, there was plenty of music. Tuesday marked 37 years since the murder of Butch Pratt, a promising young man that had just graduated from Thiel College in a tragedy that still lingers in the memories of locals, in cable TV reruns and internet archives. Pratt was 22 when he was lured to a secluded area of Hudson, Ohio — about 65 miles from Thiel — and beaten to death.

JAMESTOWN — This sale is going to the dogs. And cats. In one of Strayhaven Animal Shelter’s biggest, annual fundraisers, board members and volunteers opened their annual Treasure Sale at the Jamestown Fairgrounds, Friday, and the community showed up in a big way. Board President Andie Mentzer said there were about 250 in line to start the sale, with it continuing through Sunday.

Dale Crowley spent 50 years of his career in business and accounting, what he calls the “1+1=2 World,” but his transition to poetry isn’t as simple as that math. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1970, then joined the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, before graduating from Thiel College with a degree in accounting and business administration in 1980. Over the years, he found himself writing a novel.

SANDY LAKE — Organizers of the long-running Sandy Lake Fun Days have announced the festival is canceled for this year, with hopes that more volunteers come forward to bring it back in 2026. “It’s just a little too much to take on for two people,” said Kara Allen, who heads the Sandy Lake Fun Days Committee with Cathy Oakes. She said they had helpers, but are in need of volunteers to take on chunks of the work, such as fund-raising.

Greenville water system sale continues slow progress

According to Greenville water Authority Manager Jessica Micco, the application for the sale was submitted to the Public Utilities Commission on April 25, and remains in the review process.
