Government shutdown countdownWASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden signed a bill into law Saturday that averts a government shutdown, bringing a final close to days of upheaval after Congress approved a temporary funding plan just past the deadline and refused President-elect Donald Trump’s core debt demands in the package. The deal funds the government at current levels through March 14 and provides $100 billion in disaster aid and $10 billion in agricultural assistance to farmers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will hear arguments next month over the constitutionality of the federal law that could ban TikTok in the United States if its Chinese parent company doesn’t sell it. The justices will hear arguments Jan. 10 about whether the law impermissibly restricts speech in violation of the First Amendment. The law, enacted in April, set a Jan. 19 deadline for TikTok to be sold or else face a ban in the United States.

St. Paul City Council hears public’s input on marijuana ordinanceThe St. Paul City Council heard community input Wednesday on a proposal to ban marijuana, hemp and cigarette smoking in city-controlled public spaces. Violations would be a petty misdemeanor. Although the ordinance would ban the use of cannabis, hemp, and tobacco products in those spaces, officials say it wouldn’t prohibit possession of the products. Recreational marijuana became legal in Minnesota on Aug. 1.

Judge approves agreement between Minneapolis, Minnesota Department of Human RightsA Hennepin County judge signed a court enforceable settlement agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights on Thursday. Speaking from the bench Thursday afternoon, Judge Karen Janisch said she would allow the two parties to move forward with the agreement that they negotiated.
