MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — Thick smoke blanketed the streets and seeped into homes and vehicles, prompting an air quality alert for Horry County on Saturday. Residents in homes in the Carolina Forest Area described how their homes have filled up with smoke, setting off their fire alarms and causing their eyes and throats to burn. According to the CDC, wildfire smoke contains a complex mixture of gases and particles from burning vegetation and other materials.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — A winter storm system is canceling hundreds of flights across the south. More than 500 cancellations have been reported at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Flights in and out of Myrtle Beach International Airport are seeing impacts from those cancelations Friday morning, according to the airports website. A few American Airlines flights to and from Charlotte beginning in the afternoon have already been canceled.

MULLINS, S.C. -- — Officials in Marion County are investigating a deadly shooting in Mullins Thursday morning. According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, deputies and investigators are on the scene of a shooting at 5303 Bluff Road near Highway 917. Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson is also on scene and the State Law Enforcement Division Crime Scene Unit has been called in to assist. Community members tell ABC 15 that a car appears to have wrecked. Residents are asked to avoid the area.

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C.-- — One person is dead after a single vehicle crash on Huggins Road in Florence County around 2:02am on Thursday. According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 2004 Chevy Tahoe carrying two people was traveling north on Huggins Road near Old Spring Road when it went off the side of the road, overturned and caught on fire. One person died, another was transported to the hospital. The name of the person killed has not been released. Stick with ABC 15 for updates.

Federal judges hear oral arguments in noise ordinance lawsuit against North Myrtle Beach

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed the lawsuit in 2022, contesting an amendment to the city's ordinance that bans "profane, vulgar and obscene music" played above 30 decibels—equivalent to a whisper or rustling leaves. The lower court struck down the profanity provision and upheld the obscenity provision. The only question on appeal was whether the vulgar provision (interpreted to only cover constitutionally obscene noise) may remain.
