For those with developmental disorders like autism, shopping can be a struggle — the bright lights, noise and the crush of the crowd can trigger sensitivities in some living with the condition. But some stores in Saskatchewan are working to make the experience more manageable. Growing up, Derek Swicheniuk just knew he was different. “I never fit in,” he said. Being diagnosed with autism as an adult, four years ago, felt like a blow at first, says Swicheniuk.

The Saskatoon Fire Department had a unique call on Monday that you could say was a labour of love. A primary care paramedic with the fire department helped deliver a baby boy. The special delivery call came in at 5:45 p.m. from a mom in labour — what the fire department described in a statement as “imminent childbirth.” The crew arrived as the mom was already starting to have the baby. The fire department paramedic was rushed in to assist, and the bundle of joy was welcomed into the world.

Muslims around the world and here in Saskatoon celebrated Eid al-Fitr on Sunday, marking the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. At Prairieland Park, thousands of people joined in communal prayers. “Aside from fasting from food, it’s a very spiritual fasting too. It creates a very collective sense of empathy and compassion,” Syed Mueez Rafiquie with the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan told CTV News. The celebrations bring joy but also highlight ongoing struggles faced by many.

Based on the recent uptick in reports from police, the new weapon of choice on Saskatoon transit seems to be bear spray. Chelsey Cameron-Fehr takes the bus regularly and so does her 15-year-old daughter, who travels on the bus to and from school. Safety is a real issue. “At least three to four times a week, she’s telling me that someone’s getting bear sprayed, somebody is getting attacked, or people are starting fights,” Cameron-Fehr told CTV News.
