The assault trial for a former principal of a private Christian school began at Saskatoon’s Court of King’s Bench on Monday. Duff Arthur Friesen, 67, is facing 11 charges of assault with a weapon. He is being tried on the first four charges now, and the other seven charges (by different complainants) in September. The alleged incidents happened while Friesen was a principal at the then-called Christian Centre Academy.

The University of Saskatchewan is shutting down its Language Centre after three decades of helping international students learn English. Since opening in 1995, the centre has welcomed students from around the world, but enrolment has dropped. “The number of students and the tuition actually doesn’t cover the cost of the salaries of the people who were the teachers,” Jerome Cranston, the vice-provost of students and learning, told CTV News. The centre has been operating in a deficit since 2017.

A Saskatoon man on trial for killing his roommate took the witness stand, denying he consumed magic mushrooms before the homicide. Steffen Pohl was found dead inside his Idylwyld Drive North home on Jan. 30, 2023. Nader Butter, Pohl’s roommate, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Butter was impaired by alcohol and magic mushrooms when he killed Pohl with a hammer, according to an agreed statement of facts.

Saskatchewan is seeing some success from its digital advertising campaign targeting American doctors. The ads target family doctors, anesthetists, and emergency room physicians — encouraging them to move to Saskatchewan. “More security and less drama. Join us in Saskatchewan!” one of the ads reads. As a result of the campaign, the Ministry of Health said it’s met virtually with two American anesthesiologists and a meeting with an emergency physician is scheduled.
