The annual Lincoln Day Dinner was conducted April 4 at the Kentland Community Center. The Newton County Republican event featured Congressman Jim Baird as guest speaker. Party chairman Tamra James welcomed everyone with Vivian Ferguson leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Judge Patrick Ryan gave the Invocation and later the Benediction. Party vice chairman Don Harris provided the introductions, with elected county officials being recognized.

Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran has released information about the latest scams his office is being notified of. In what has become a regular video alert, this one dated April 3, Cothran told people about an insurance scam his office was called about. He said a local resident received an email saying he was eligible to receive up to $2,600 of the insurance premiums that he paid in 2024 as a refund. At it's April 8 meeting, the Iroquois County Board approved text amendments for the solar, wind and battery ordinances. During the meeting, board member Doug Geiger, chair of the tax and zoning committee, read from the minutes of the committee's April 1 meeting about the ordinances. He said the committee met with Andrew Kent, who is with the law firm Heyl Royster, and was retained by Iroquois County State's Attorney Michael Quinlan to help in the adoption process for the three ordinances.

Iroquois County Board members heard from the new executive director of Iroquois Mental Health Center. Amy Zabel said she wanted to introduce herself to everyone. "I started in October of last year. I was employed at the mental health center from '20 to '21."She took a short hiatus and then worked in human resources after finishing four years at Olivet Nazarene University. She said she was invited by some board members to apply for the executive director position.

Cleanup duties along Elm Street/Cemetery Road in Watseka have officially been designated to The Arc of Iroquois County. A group of volunteers from The Arc have committed to cleaning up the trash along the road from North Fourth Street to Oak Hill Road through the city's Adopt-a-Street Program. John Owens, service coordinator from The Arc, said they had approached the city a while back about adopting the road. "They were very receptive," he said.
