A group of dancers from the Illiana area are heading to National competitions this weekend. They are from Dancespiration Dance Academy in Watseka, and are from Iroquois and Newton counties. Owner/choreographer Blair Schaumburg said the seven groups of dancers are heading to Branson, Missouri, to compete in the Nationals competitions through Starpower National Talent Competition. There are 28 dancers going. Schaumburg's dancers have competed in similar events in the past.

A local nurse saved the life of a young girl who had nearly drowned at Raccoon State Recreation Area swimming beach in Parke County, Indiana, June 10. Kelley Norton of Watseka said his family - he, his daughter-in-law Ashley Pecchenino, two granddaughters and Ashley's sister and children - went camping at the campground near Rockville, Indiana. "We camped Monday and on Tuesday, we decided to go to the beach. They have a real nice beach there," he said. "It was right after lunchtime.

A Rehabilitation Therapy Center is the newest fundraising project for the Iroquois Memorial Hospital Development Council. Diane Natschke, chairman of the Development Council, said the center will be located at the corner of Fourth Street and Fairman Avenue in Watseka. This is where the old Roberts Clinic property was located. The Development Council is the fundraising branch of the hospital, because the hospital is a not-for-profit organization, she said.

North Newton's Lady Spartans softball team made history June 13 earning the state championship title in the Class 1A softball tournament at Purdue University. The team defeated the Clay City Eels 2-0. This is the first state title in the school's history in any sport. "I still don't think it's sat in," Head Coach Katherine Messersmith said via telephone June 17. "We had decided we were going to leave about 1:30 our time. We got a certain amount of time on Purdue's baseball field when we got there.
