The Iroquois County Board has announced that all American Rescue Plan Act allocations have been made. Jill Johnson, Iroquois County Finance manager, released the list May 5. The county was awarded $5,266,577.00. It was part of a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed by Congress in 2021. This was a way the government provided assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Times-Republic Students of the Year for 2025 are Maya Machev and James Newell. Each year the Times-Republic partners with Watseka Community High School to present the awards, which are determined by the teachers on a number of criteria. The announcement was made at the May 5 Seniors Honors Night. Both Machev and Newell have been busy the last four years. Machev was involved in 27 activities throughout her four years. "I did not have a lot of free time," she smiled.

Watseka Youth League Baseball conducted the annual Opening Day celebration May 3 at Peters Park. League President Coy Hamilton thanked everyone for coming. The coaches and players had made their way from the Old Courthouse Museum to Peters Park, escorted by two rigs from the Watseka Fire Department. The teams gathered on the downhill baseball field at Peters Park to participate in the celebration of the day.

Kentland celebrated Arbor Day in Batton Park on April 24. The Kentland Park Board and Kentland Tree Board presented the annual Arbor Day event and tree giveaway. The event was a time to announce the fifth grade poster winners. The Healthy Trees, Healthy Me winners were: Bayla Holloway, first place; Teddy Chopps, second place, and Owen Washburn, third. Alexxys Standish assisted in planting a tulip tree with Kathleen White, tree board member. The South Newton travel choir sang three songs.

A South Newton senior has been selected for an internship program with a farmers cooperative. Michael Dewing was honored April 24 with the Keystone SEEd signing event. According to information from the cooperative, "This program is quite an honor -we received 51 applicants, interviewed nearly 30 finalists, and shared offers to the top 20.
