Iroquois County releases ARPA allocation list

The Iroquois County Board has announced that all American Rescue Plan Act allocations have been made. Jill Johnson, Iroquois County Finance manager, released the list May 5. The county was awarded $5,266,577.00. It was part of a $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill passed by Congress in 2021. This was a way the government provided assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Maya Machev and James Newell

The Times-Republic Students of the Year for 2025 are Maya Machev and James Newell. Each year the Times-Republic partners with Watseka Community High School to present the awards, which are determined by the teachers on a number of criteria. The announcement was made at the May 5 Seniors Honors Night. Both Machev and Newell have been busy the last four years. Machev was involved in 27 activities throughout her four years. "I did not have a lot of free time," she smiled.
Opening Day conducted at Watseka's Peters Park

Watseka Youth League Baseball conducted the annual Opening Day celebration May 3 at Peters Park. League President Coy Hamilton thanked everyone for coming. The coaches and players had made their way from the Old Courthouse Museum to Peters Park, escorted by two rigs from the Watseka Fire Department. The teams gathered on the downhill baseball field at Peters Park to participate in the celebration of the day.
Kentland conducts Arbor Day events in Batton Park

Kentland celebrated Arbor Day in Batton Park on April 24. The Kentland Park Board and Kentland Tree Board presented the annual Arbor Day event and tree giveaway. The event was a time to announce the fifth grade poster winners. The Healthy Trees, Healthy Me winners were: Bayla Holloway, first place; Teddy Chopps, second place, and Owen Washburn, third. Alexxys Standish assisted in planting a tulip tree with Kathleen White, tree board member. The South Newton travel choir sang three songs.
South Newton senior selected for internship program

A South Newton senior has been selected for an internship program with a farmers cooperative. Michael Dewing was honored April 24 with the Keystone SEEd signing event. According to information from the cooperative, "This program is quite an honor -we received 51 applicants, interviewed nearly 30 finalists, and shared offers to the top 20.
Watseka alderman seated, police ordinance amendment tabled

A new alderman was appointed and an ordinance change was tabled at the Watseka City Council meeting April 29. The council also heard from the public in support of the city's police officers. Mayor Benny Marcier appointed Terry Pence as third ward aldermen to replace the vacancy left when Marcier was elected mayor. This is a two-year term to fill that vacancy. The public comments were with regard to the ordinance amendment proposal.

The memorial is located at the entrance to Legion Park in Watseka and is dedicated to "our Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
One person taken to hospital with injuries after car/train accident at Sheldon

One person was taken to the hospital with injuries after a passenger car and a train collided near Sheldon April 24. According to Illinois State Police reports, the accident happened at 1:12 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24 at the Sheldon railroad crossing near Fourth Street. Police indicate that preliminary information indicates that both eastbound and westbound lanes were closed because of the accident.
Kentland Retail Merchants conduct annual Easter Egg Hunt

The Kentland Retail Merchants Association conducted the annual Easter Egg Hunt on the lawn of the Newton County Courthouse April 19. The lawn was covered in eggs and other items for children to seek. The lawn was divided into areas designated by age. There were also some eggs that would earn the finders a special prize. The Easter Bunny made a visit while the hunt was going on and took time to visit with children before and after the hunt.
Newton County Community Services plans three fundraising events

Newton County Community Services is planning three events to raise funds and give people activities to enjoy. Executive Director Trisha Drain said the fundraisers will assist with funding at the end of the grant cycle. "The fundraisers particularly this year are focusing on our nutrition programs which feed seniors over 60 a hot daily lunch at four locations across the county. We also offer a food pantry on site in Morocco for community members in need.
