MOROCCO - North Newton ace Sydney Rainford tossed a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts in leading the Spartans to a 9-1 victory over Rensselaer Central on Monday night, April 21. Rainford, one of the top pitchers in Northwest Indiana, pitched seven innings, allowing one run on a solo home run by Brynn Hannon. Kali Northcutt had the other hit for RCHS (3-3), a single.

RENSSELAER - Longtime Rensselaer resident, man-about-town and ex-Saint Joseph's College economics professor Bob Schenk was recognized with a simple but appropriate honor by city officials earlier this month. The city had a black bike rack set into concrete near the shelter at Filson Park in memory of Schenk, who passed away at the age of 79 on March 17.
Remington Police want to start K-9 program

REMINGTON - The Jasper Newton Foundation is helping the Remington Police Department collect funds to develop a K-9 program for its community this spring. Remington's goal is to bring a highly-trained police dog to assist with searches, tracking, drug detection and officer safety. "A K-9 unit strengthens our ability to respond quickly, de-escalate dangerous situations and protect both residents and officers," said Remington Town Marshal John Schuetzenhoffer.

RENSSELAER - Mark Jordan was chosen by the seven rural township trustees to serve a second term on the Rensselaer Central School Board last week. Jordan's four-year term will start on July 1 and conclude on June 30, 2029. Trustees collected applications for the position and met April 9 to interview and appoint a board member for District 4.

WHEATFIELD - Kankakee Valley captured 15 of 16 events to dominate county rival Rensselaer Central, 115-17, in girls' track Thursday night at KVHS. Mia Hoffman-Buczek won three individual titles and Avery Myers and Krista Sytsma won two events each. Hoffman-Buczek won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in 17.54 seconds and 51.48 seconds, respectively, and Myers was the 100-meter dash champion in 12.91 and the 200 meters in 26.75. Hoffman-Buczek also won the long jump at 14 feet, 1 inch.
Man, woman take plea deal in rape case

ANGOLA - A man and woman who have been facing Level 3 felony rape charges and other charges from a 2022 incident have reached a plea bargain in their cases that will significantly reduce their possible prison time. Melvin Merritt III, now 50, Hamilton Lake, and Tasha J. Frank, 40, Bryan, Ohio, who were arrested in November 2022, are scheduled to be sentenced on July 16 in Steuben Superior Court. The two have agreed to plead guilty to Level 6 felony charges of neglect of a dependent.
