    HONOLULU (Island News) -- Early this morning, lava and ash erupted from Halemaʻumaʻu Crater on Kīlauea volcano, marking another round of volcanic activity. Ash plumes rose as high as 20,000 feet into the air. Trade winds are pushing the ash toward the west-southwest, and communities such as Pāhala and Wood Valley, along with Highway 11, could see ashfall. Winds may also pick up ash from the ground, creating dusty conditions.

    HONOLULU (Island News) -- Hurricane Erick is now moving inland over southern Mexico near Punta Maldonado. As of this morning, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour and is moving northwest at 12 miles per hour. The center of Erick is expected to continue moving across southern and southwestern Mexico today before weakening and likely breaking apart by tonight. Heavy rain continues in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, with up to 16 inches possible in some areas.

    HONOLULU (Island News) -- Today, satellite images show bands of clouds moving in on the trade winds, bringing brief showers mainly to windward mountain slopes. These clouds are fairly stable, and the weather overall remains dry and calm. A weak weather system, known as an easterly wave, is approaching from the east and is expected to move over the islands from Thursday night into Friday. This will bring a short increase in showers, possibly reaching drier leeward areas.

    HONOLULU (Island News) -- Hurricane Erick has strengthened into a Category 2 storm, with maximum winds of 100 miles per hour. An Air Force reconnaissance plane confirmed the upgrade earlier today. The storm is about 105 miles south of Puerto Ángel, Mexico, and is moving northwest at around 9 miles per hour. Erick is expected to continue getting stronger and could become a major hurricane by tonight or early Thursday.

These passing showers are most likely during the overnight and early morning hours. High-level cirrus clouds are also drifting over the islands, which may lead to colorful sunrises and sunsets. Trade winds will stay moderate to breezy through Friday.
