A micro-algae bloom is the likely cause of dead marine life reported from Waitpinga to Basham Beach in the Fleurieu Peninsula, the EPA says. The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) is investigating the fish deaths. Initial results from water testing would be available in about a week. Dead octopuses have been found along South Australian beaches as environment authorities say a micro-algae bloom could be to blame for fish deaths on the weekend.

Water carters are facing “unprecedented” demand for services, with sporting clubs opening up their facilities for people to shower in some areas. Carp is an introduced pest in Australia and when caught must be killed and not returned to the water. It remains, however, an important part of the Christmas meal for Australians of Eastern European heritage. Carp is traditionally served on Christmas Eve. The carp caught by Glen Hill can end up in some very fancy dishes, including the 2024 Melbourne Royal Australian Food Award gold medal-winning smoked carp pate.
