Maverick Handley was behind the plate that day in 2022, when Brandon Young walked off the mound knowing something was wrong with his elbow. Before the discomfort started, Handley, then a catcher with Double-A Bowie, was impressed by the performance of this 6-foot-6 right-hander who was rapidly gaining a following in the Orioles organization as a pitcher to watch. Handley wouldn’t see Young again up close for almost two years.

For all the momentum Thursday night built for the Orioles — and it felt sizable, considering Tomoyuki Sugano provided a harried rotation its best start of the season — momentum can hit a wall just as quickly. In this sense, the wall was in center field, and Elly De La Cruz’s homer didn’t hit it particularly quickly. The Reds shortstop blasted a towering shot that hit off the top of the wall.

Orioles right-hander Brandon Young is scheduled to make his major league debut Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore announced. The 26-year-old joined the taxi squad Friday in anticipation of his first start. The path here has been arduous for Young. Scott Blewett has heard the jokes since he was a kid. I mean, how could he not? It’s right there — low-hanging fruit in the form of a pun. By this point, the new Orioles reliever is used to the reaction, but it came up all over again when Baltimore claimed him off waivers this week. The 29-year-old hasn’t blown it very much. He’s a major leaguer for a reason, a former second-round draft pick who has solid numbers in the limited time he has spent at the highest level of the game.

The Orioles have waited long enough for a night like this. They waited 18 games, to be exact, to seal a second consecutive victory. They waited and waited — but never doubted a semblance of consistency would come — and finally they have it. The sample is, of course, tiny. To say the Orioles have turned the corner, that all the issues that arose through the first 17 games have evaporated, would be to peer at the situation with orange-tinted shades.
