Ordinarily Japan can’t get enough Cocoichi, but some are saying enough is enough with the price hikes. Curry rice is one of Japan’s favorite things to eat, and its favorite restaurant to eat it at is Cocoichibanya. Also known as Cocoichi, the chain, which was founded in 1978, has over 1,200 branches in Japan, making it the country’s most prominent curry specialty restaurant by far.

Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan isn’t shy about leaning just as heavily into the second geographic part of its name as it does the first. So while sure, they’re happy to hook you up with a bucket of the Colonel’s original-recipe fried chicken, they also regularly offer items that feature Japanese culinary creativity, and that’s what’s on the way with a new sandwich that’s joining the KFC Japan menu: the Yuzu Shichimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger.

In April, customs officials at Osaka’s Kansai International Airport learned that a woman who was trying to enter Japan had crammed a sock into the crotch of her clothing. Apparently the bulge wasn’t immediately visually apparent, but an officer noticed that the traveler, a 35-year-old Brazilian woman named Jessica Ramos de Souza, looked unusually tense while she was going through the standard customs process.

Right now, if the Japanese police are formally questioning a person who doesn’t speak Japanese, they’re required to provide an interpreter, who will provide in-person translations at the police station where the suspect is being questioned. That’s going to change, though, and it’s going to change very soon, due to a revision of the National Police Agency’s Criminal Investigation Protocols.

That was something our ace reporter Mr. Sato experienced first hand on his recent trip to the Black Thunder factory in the town of Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, where they make Japan’s favorite brand of incredibly cheap, but also incredibly delicious, chocolate.
