Performers push and serve rolling carts of drinks. Models appear walking down the runways with fake guns. One even has a Molotov cocktail that shoots flames. These scenes attracted the community, with local bands and live music playing during the runway shows. This is just one moment out of Portland’s fashion scene in the 2000s. Artists obtained warehouses for these hand-created fashion shows through barter or working overtime.

Many short-term study abroad programs, led by faculty members across various academic fields, are available to Portland State students in the summer of 2024. Four of these programs are detailed below. London, EnglandLiterary London – Texts and ContextsLiterary London – Texts and Contexts provides students with a deeper historical and cultural understanding of English literature while exploring the city of London. This program, July 8–20, 2024, is led by English Professor Dr. Keri Behre.

Portland State senior Adalia Rios is a BFA student who specializes in oil painting. Her art blurs the boundaries between horror and fantasy, giving life to otherworldly creatures with a gloomy intensity. Rios characterizes her works as both surrealist self-portraits and tangible expressions of mental illness, grief and isolation. Originally from Mission Viejo, CA, Rios relocated to Portland three years ago.

Portland is home to a robust and diverse community of artists and creatives. You will not have to travel far from Portland State to experience it. Right on campus—inside Fariborz Maseeh Hall—is a free and public art museum with shows, events and exhibitions evolving all year round.The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA at PSU) is a collaborative institution which intends to resonate with students across all disciplines, not just those studying art.

Over two years in the making, a memorial commemorating Jason Erik Washington inches closer to being in the hands of an artist. In 2018, Jason Washington was killed by armed university police officers while trying to break up a fight between two other men on campus. At 45, Jason Washington was a Navy veteran and longtime United States Postal Service worker. He was also Black.
