Graduate students in the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program at Portland State are finalizing their capstone thesis projects. Each member of the 18-student cohort has designed a thesis project guided by an overarching question corresponding to a particular place or community. “They can be situated more in theory or more in practice, depending on what you want to do,” said M.Arch student Kaleb Huerta.

The Hong Kong Student Association (HKSA) at Portland State is a cultural club open to all students interested in Hong Kong culture. The club seeks to organize events that educate the PSU student body about Hong Kong and foster connections between students with this shared interest. “HKSA is open to anyone, even if you’re not from Hong Kong or [don’t] have any Cantonese background,” said Connie Tran, Co-President of HKSA. “My parents were from Vietnam.

Rosanna Nafziger—an alum of Portland State’s MFA in Creative Writing Program—has been awarded a 2024 Oregon Literary Fellowship. This fellowship is considered one of the most prestigious literary awards in the Pacific Northwest. It comes with a cash prize to support Oregon writers’ work and literary projects.

Izaak Fazekas is an interdisciplinary transmedia artist in the BFA program at PSU. Originally from New Orleans, Fazekas relocated to Portland in 2019 in order to pursue an education in the PNW. Fazekas spoke with Portland State Vanguard to discuss his art practice and some of his recent works. Vanguard: What kind of materials and mediums do you enjoy working with? Fazekas: I paint. I draw. I do sculpture. I like sculpture a lot. I feel like it gets things across.
