Graduate students in the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program at Portland State are finalizing their capstone thesis projects. Each member of the 18-student cohort has designed a thesis project guided by an overarching question corresponding to a particular place or community. “They can be situated more in theory or more in practice, depending on what you want to do,” said M.Arch student Kaleb Huerta.

The Hong Kong Student Association (HKSA) at Portland State is a cultural club open to all students interested in Hong Kong culture. The club seeks to organize events that educate the PSU student body about Hong Kong and foster connections between students with this shared interest. “HKSA is open to anyone, even if you’re not from Hong Kong or [don’t] have any Cantonese background,” said Connie Tran, Co-President of HKSA. “My parents were from Vietnam.

Rosanna Nafziger—an alum of Portland State’s MFA in Creative Writing Program—has been awarded a 2024 Oregon Literary Fellowship. This fellowship is considered one of the most prestigious literary awards in the Pacific Northwest. It comes with a cash prize to support Oregon writers’ work and literary projects.

Izaak Fazekas is an interdisciplinary transmedia artist in the BFA program at PSU. Originally from New Orleans, Fazekas relocated to Portland in 2019 in order to pursue an education in the PNW. Fazekas spoke with Portland State Vanguard to discuss his art practice and some of his recent works. Vanguard: What kind of materials and mediums do you enjoy working with? Fazekas: I paint. I draw. I do sculpture. I like sculpture a lot. I feel like it gets things across.

Chuck Dillard is an associate professor of collaborative piano at Portland State. He is also the music director for the PSU Opera and the founder of the non-profit organization Queer Opera. Originally from South Carolina, Dillard came to PSU in 2016 to create the university’s collaborative piano graduate program. Dillard will speak in The Arts at the Vanguard of Change, a conversational series hosted by PSU’s college of the arts.

The work of artist Kyra Watkins can be seen throughout Portland, such as in the North Park Blocks, where the project Never Look Away marks the first mural to celebrate LGBTQ+ pioneers in Oregon; at Morrison Place in SE Portland, where the Ladies Up Mural Project celebrates local, female-identifying artists; and at Providence Park, where Watkins created a larger-than-life mural in honor of soccer athlete Clyde Best.

Four of these programs are detailed below. London, EnglandLiterary London – Texts and ContextsLiterary London – Texts and Contexts provides students with a deeper historical and cultural understanding of English literature while exploring the city of London. Students, faculty and community members gathered in room 428 of Cramer Hall on Nov. 3 to celebrate the opening of Portland State’s DREAMer Resource Center. The center is a space dedicated to DREAMers, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) recipients, those who are undocumented or mixed-status, immigrants and their allied communities.

A new art and literary magazine is currently underway in Portland called Invisible Force. Its “biggest goal is [for] people that are disabled to be able to tell their story,” said Anna Culver—Portland Community College student, musician, artist and the magazine’s art director. Invisible Force originated as a student collaboration at PCC’s Accessible Ed & Disability Resources center.
