There are calls for an investigation into the use of restaurant gift cards by the City of Richmond. Documents obtained by Global News through the freedom of information requests indicate about $498,000 was spent on the cards over three years. Minus possible duplicates, it’s about $445,000. Richmond had previously indicated that gift cards cost taxpayers $32,800 in 2022, $71,550 in and $71,300 in 2024. The FOI results indicate much larger numbers.

A Global News investigation has revealed how the City of Richmond spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on restaurant gift cards. Results of a freedom of information request for the years 2022, 2023 and 2024 returned 493 pages of documents, including receipts and emails. They show the city spent approximately $156,000 in 2022, $218,000 in 2023 and $124,000 in 2024, for a total of about $498,000.

Make sure to report it if you are a victim of crime. That was the message from Vancouver police to seniors during a recent safety seminar. So far this year, there have been 39 reported assaults against seniors. Last year there were 238. But police say many crimes go unreported.

In 2018 the Vancouver Police Department started its program using drones, or remotely piloted aerial systems (RPAS). Last year their 20 drones flew 1,826 missions. One of their drones was critical in capturing murder suspect Brendan Colin McBride, accused of killing a man in downtown Vancouver in September 2024 and of slicing off another person's hand. McBride was found on Habitat Island. The drone got there first.

Ninety-three-year-old Clifford Labree has been living at the Surrey Urban Mission's shelter for a year and a half. He has no other options and fears being out on the street. "Where am I going to go there's nothing," Labree told Global News. "Here I get help. Here I get an ambulance if I need it."Supportive housing would be more appropriate for the senior, but there aren't any affordable openings available.

For the past 20 years, the Premier's Innovation and Excellence Awards have recognized B.C. government employees. Started by the BC Liberals 20 years ago, it's put on by the BC Public Service. The latest one, in November, cost almost $118,000 dollars. Food and beverages at the event cost the province more than $75,000, with meals priced at $99 per plate. And while it was largely a cash bar, some drinks were purchased, including a few hundred dollars worth of wine and cocktails for volunteers.
