    About three weeks after shutting down the city’s two animal shelters in response to a viral canine disease outbreak, Fort Worth officials have reopened one of the shelters to the public. The Chuck & Brenda Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center at 4900 Martin St. in southeast Fort Worth resumed adoption, foster and volunteer opportunities April 16. The city’s North Animal Campus at 351 Hillshire Drive in Haslet remains closed until further notice.

    In an effort to honor Latino history and further representation across the city, Fort Worth City Council member Carlos Flores wants to make Cesar Chavez Day a paid holiday for all city employees. The proposal comes with a price tag of over $3.4 million, but would bring Fort Worth up to the standard number of holidays seen across local municipalities in Texas, according to a staff report presented to council members during an April 15 work session meeting.

    Fort Worth drivers will soon see new blue signs stationed at more than two dozen key intersections across the city. Emblazoned with the message “It’s OK to say no to panhandlers” in bold, white capital letters, the signs are part of a $55,000 pilot program meant to curb panhandling across the city.

    As Fort Worth’s population continues to grow, city officials have poured an influx of money into creating a roadmap for the city’s land use, budget priorities and annexation plans through 2050. The project of updating the city’s comprehensive plan has been in the works for years, with the process officially kicking off in spring 2024. Fort Worth typically makes minor updates to the comprehensive plan annually each March but is significantly revamping the document for the first time since 2000.

    After temporarily closing the city’s two animal shelters in response to a viral outbreak of a deadly canine disease at the end of March, Fort Worth Animal Care & Control is cautiously taking the first step toward resuming normal operations. The city announced the shelter closures March 27, citing its need to contain and mitigate the spread of the highly contagious, incurable and airborne canine distemper virus.
