As Police Chief Neil Noakes’ prepares to retire this month, Fort Worth officials have committed to following a transparent process inclusive of community voices to hire his successor. The city kicked off the public engagement portion of the process to hire Fort Worth’s top law enforcement post with an online survey that went live at the end of April.

In a packed race of six candidates, Deborah Peoples emerged victorious as the voters’ choice for Fort Worth City Council’s open District 5 seat. The Tarrant County Elections Office reports that Peoples has secured 2,524 votes in the May 3 election, or 54.27% of the vote total with all 160 vote centers reporting. Peoples, a retired AT&T executive and former chair of the Tarrant County Democratic Party, will succeed longtime council member Gyna Bivens, who has led the district since 2013.

Election Day is May 3, and Tarrant County residents must decide the next leaders for various local offices, such as city councils and school districts as well as the boards for Tarrant County College and the Tarrant Regional Water District. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Tarrant County voters may cast their ballots at any polling location in the county.

Fort Worth voters will determine the city’s next leaders in the May 3 election as all Fort Worth City Council seats are on the ballot. Of the 11 council positions, nine current members are seeking reelection. The seats for districts 5 and 6 are open, as council members Gyna Bivens and Jared Williams, respectively, are not seeking reelection. The nine incumbent members are facing a total of 16 challengers, with the mayor’s race attracting the most competition.
