Teresa Palmer was elected as the first woman mayor of the City of Willow Park in early and election-day voting that culminated on May 3. Palmer was successful in her challenge to eight-year incumbent Doyle Moss. Palmer took 64% of the votes. Likewise in Aledo, city council member Shane Davis successfully upset Mayor Nick Stanley in a closer race. Davis took 56.9% of the votes in that race. Challenger Todd Covington unseated Aledo City Council member Christian Pearson with 63% of the vote.

Within the next nine months or so there is likely to be a new restroom facility and picnic pavilion at King’s Gate Park — and the design team will be four students from Aledo High School’s architecture program. Those four students — junior Faith Bartlett, senior Samuel Ghent, and juniors Amelia Buck and Matthew Dominich showed a model of their plan and provided details at the April 22 meeting of the Willow Park City Council.

The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees took care of their action items in fairly short order at their regular meeting on March 17. The board unanimously agreed to approve a proposal for $509,754 to replace the turf at the Aledo Middle School stadium. Chief Facilities and Construction Officer Chris Campbell told the board the existing turf is more than 12 years old, while the general life span of turf is 8-10 years. The board also approved the purchase of student Chromebooks.

It was a big day for the City of Weatherford, the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce, and aficionados of Costco as the major retailer held its grand opening at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 15. The day started much earlier not only for the staff of the store, but for would-be customers who began lining up during the night to be among the first to enter the store when it opened. Rosendo and Rebecca, residents of Fort Worth, arrived about 1 a.m. to be the first in line.

While the word “growth” did not appear on the agenda for the Aledo City Council’s meeting on Feb. 27, it was primarily growth that the council addressed. The biggest-ticket item was the approval by the council to issue certificates of obligation of $27,775,000 for the purpose of sewer line improvements. City Manager Noah Simon said he expects annual payments to be about $1,115 million, and that the funds will come from utility funds.
