(KY3) - Over the past two weeks at the Bungalows at Chesterfield Village, there’s been a woman practicing her pitching. “Most of the time someone says, ‘Ah, you’ve done real good,’” Altha Corlew said. Using a walker for balance, Altha lobs the ball to her catcher, Mary Lea Hicks. If you’re wondering, Hicks is 93 years old and Altha? “I am 102 and about six months,” Altha smiled.

That got us thinking here at KY3, how did “Queen City” become a nickname for Springfield? A search at the Library Center in Springfield shows the first mention of Springfield being called the “Queen City” was on July 8, 1870.

(KY3) - Along the rail tracks in Monett, printed in purple and gold, a sign proclaims the city as the “Strawberry Capital of the World.” “It was quite big,” lifelong resident Rod Anderson said. A history buff, Rod has helped collect strawberry-related treasures from years past for the Monett Historical Society’s Museum. You can visit it at 422 East Broadway in Monett. Strawberries were introduced to southwest Missouri in the 1880s and the cash crop was huge for Monett.
