HOUSTON (KIAH) — A former Houston ISD official and a former contractor were found guilty of multiple charges, including bribery, conspiracy and witness tampering. Brian Busby and Anthony Hutchinson were found guilty by a federal judge of conspiracy, bribery, filing false tax returns and witness tampering. Hutchinson was also convicted of seven counts of wire fraud.
Man convicted of killing family in Harris County gets death penalty

HOUSTON (KIAH) — A man who plead guilty to killing a family of three will be put to death. Jurors deliberated Xavier Davis’ fate for hours in a Harris County court on Thursday. Last month, he plead guilty to the 2021 killing of Donyavia Lagway, Gregory Carhee, and their daughter, 6-year-old Harmony. Their 10-year-old daughter was also shot – but survived, by playing dead. This was the first death penalty in Harris County since 2022.
City of Houston approves new rules for short term rentals

HOUSTON (KIAH) — There will now be some new rules on short-term rentals in Houston. On Wednesday, city councilmembers discussed the changes for about 30 minutes, before passing them. Short-term rentals include all Airbnb rentals, as well as VRBOs. The new rules include not being able to advertise short-term rentals as event spaces. Property owners will have to pay a $275 fee to the city each year.
3 men stabbed in road rage incident in northwest Harris County, constable says

HOUSTON (KIAH) — Three victims have been stabbed in northwest Harris County in what constables say was a road rage incident on Friday morning. Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office were called to the 10400 block of Fallbrook Drive around 9 a.m. Friday in response to a road rage incident. Man accused of shooting, killing Harris County deputy constable found guilty

HOUSTON (KIAH) — The suspect accused of killing a Harris County deputy constable in 2021 was found guilty of capital murder, according to officials. Eddie Miller, 22, was found guilty in a shooting back on Oct. 21, 2021, that killed Harris County Precinct 4 Deputy Constable Kareem Atkins. Atkins was shot and killed early Saturday morning while off-duty working an extra job at a nightclub in north Houston. Two other deputies were wounded.

City of Houston still has federal funding for flood recovery

HOUSTON (KIAH) — The City of Houston still has federal money it received for flood recovery a decade ago. Officials said that for years most of the money was spent on buyouts for homes in flood zones. Those buyouts are now being paid for mostly with county bond money, freeing up the leftover federal money for flood mitigation projects. On Wednesday, City Council approved a project for the Edgewood Park neighborhood on the south side. City officials are still looking for a second project site.
3 juveniles detained after car crashes into tree in northwest Harris County

HOUSTON (KIAH) — Three juveniles were detained overnight Thursday morning after a car crashed into a tree in northwest Harris County. Deputies with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office were called to the 21500 block of Falvel Misty Drive in the Northwood Park subdivision. They found a wrecked car near a home, but there was no one inside the car.
Poll: Majority of Houstonians excited for possible NHL, WNBA teams

HOUSTON (KIAH) — A new poll shows that a large majority of Houstonians not only are excited for an NHL team to come to the city, but also for the WNBA to return as well. A survey by the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs asked Houston residents about the possibility of adding new sports teams as well as about parks in the city. And Houston residents showed support for a hockey team as well as a pro women’s basketball team.
