Residents of apartments next to the rubble of the former Spanish Trail hotel in South Tucson have been without power for days following an arson on the property, officials say. An emergency dinner and canvassing by The Tucson Tenants Union was planned Wednesday evening at a hotel across the street from the apartments, the Spanish Trail Suites to help residents and “demand justice against negligent slumlords,” the group said on social media.

The head of a regional education advisory board has been appointed to replace Richard Fimbres on Tucson’s city council. Roque Perez, 26, was unanimously approved by the council Tuesday among three remaining candidates for the Ward 5 seat, which mostly covers the city’s south side. “I think Ward 5 has been in the habit of producing change makers, and young change makers, and I feel honored to be one of them,” he told reporters Tuesday after his appointment. “I’m in disbelief.

On a cooler-than-normal Monday, Tucson officials discussed the dangers of extreme heat as part of a kickoff to Heat Awareness Week. "Tucson is a model for how local government can work with experts, nonprofits and community members to not only protect our most vulnerable, but to also build the resilience we need to adapt to an increasingly hot future," Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said at a news conference downtown.

Tucson parking meters downtown and near the University of Arizona will be free for shorter periods of time, city officials say. The reduced free parking hours begin this summer. Starting June 2, the city will enforce paid parking rates from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday for meters downtown, the Main Gate area near campus and the Mercado districts, the city's Department of Transportation and Mobility said Friday in a news release.
