The Porterville City Council began to take on the task of making the portion of the development code that deals with signs at least a little less onerous at its meeting on Tuesday. The matter was discussed as a scheduled item. City staff plans to come back to the council with draft revisions to the portion of the ordinance that deals with signs and a proposed schedule for adoption of those revisions within 30 days.

Bill Shaffer has had a career as a “big-time” Hollywood film editor/producer. But he'll never forget the first job he had as a paperboy for The Porterville Recorder. “It was a good job,” Shaffer said. “I always referred to it as the second best job of my life.” He's always wanted to pay tribute to that job and admits he's been “kind of obsessed” about the idea.

A Stanford University study released on Monday stated an immigration enforcement effort by the border patrol in January based in Kern County led to a 22 percent increase in student absences at Central Valley schools. The study was released the day before on Tuesday when the Trump administration announced a policy in which ICE raids would no longer be done at agricultural workplaces, restaurants and hotels.

It didn't take long for Nick Maximov to turn an even MMA bout into his favor in the main event of 559 Fights 115 at Eagle Mountain Casino on Saturday. Maximov ended up winning by TK0 at 1:07 of the second round against Handesson Ferreira in the middleweight bout during the 559 event. It was one of eight professional bouts on the 559 main card as 559 held pro bouts for the first time at a packed EMC convention center. It was also the first time EMC hosted an MMA event at its new location.

As a scheduled matter the Porterville City Council will look at the city's Development Ordinance when it comes to the signs allowed in the city at its next meeting. The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The ordinance covers freestanding signs, wall signs, projecting signs, temporary signs and advertising displays.
