Why urban builders are switching to mass timber Sitting atop the Yankee Hill neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is Ascent, a 284-foot luxury apartment building made mostly of wood. The first of its kind, Ascent is also the tallest timber-concrete hybrid building in the world. Tim Gokhman, one of the developers of Ascent, says building costs are comparable to more traditional structures, but he found that building with wood has advantages over steel and concrete.

Something old is new again. Urban builders are switching from steel and concrete to a material that is more sustainable and friendly to the environment. The use of what's called mass timber is up 15%. Sitting atop the Yankee Hill neighborhood in Milwaukee is Ascent — a 284-foot-high luxury apartment building made mostly of wood. The first of its kind, Ascent is also the tallest timber-concrete hybrid building in the world. Tim Gokhman is one of the developers of Ascent.

Intensifying winds in Southern California could make it harder to continue the aerial fight against the wildfires that have devastated the Los Angeles area. More than 80 planes and helicopters are being used to battle the fierce flames, which have destroyed more than 12,000 structures.
