Wackerlin family hope for return of stolen memorial in Ottawa

Beth Wackerlin hopes that all people will be like her late son and “live and love” as he did, but there’s one person in particular she wants that sentiment to reach and hopefully change in a meaningful way. That person is the one who stole a decorated bench – a memorial to her son, Wayne Wackerlin, who in 2017 died in a work accident at the age of 25. The bench was taken from the corner of Washington and Post streets in Ottawa.

Marseilles to beef up security at memorial, new City Hall with $180,000 purchase

The Marseilles City Council took a step on Wednesday to protect two of its most valuable assets: the Middle East Conflicts Memorial Wall, and its new City Hall and police station. The Marseilles City Council approved expenses totaling nearly $180,000 for security measures around the property at 200 Riverfront Drive, the riverside lot where the memorial sits as the city is moving its offices and police into the old Illinois Valley Cellular building.

The city of Marseilles may soon be taking on the responsibility for some new property. Bill Kuiper, one of the directors of the Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles, asked the Marseilles City Council on Wednesday to consider taking over the Marseilles Cemetery Association and with it, the care of the city’s Riverview and Nichol cemeteries.
