We’ve been tracking a heat wave over the central U.S. that will move into our area as we finish the work week and kick off the weekend. Temperatures have been on the rise since Monday, but we’ll see the highs peak in the low 90s Friday and Saturday afternoon. The heat will be accompanied by equally impactful humidity with dew points rising into the low to mid 70s. This will create a feel-like temperature ranging between the mid to upper 90s.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Most Eastern North Carolinians don’t think too much about the area’s rivers on a daily basis. But they have a big impact on the economy and ecology of the region we call home and their preservation and protection is something we should be more cognizant of. Thankfully, the non-profit group Sound Rivers is putting in the work to make sure our streams, creeks and rivers are healthy and clean.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - The amount of methane in our atmosphere has been rising since measurements began in 1983. Methane, a powerful heat trapping gas that is a main contributor to climate change, is formed through the by the anerobic decomposition of organic matter, or food waste breaking down without oxygen. Over 50% of methane emissions come from landfills due to food waste decomposing anaerobically. This is entirely preventable.

The trend of rising temperatures will carry on through Thursday and peak on Friday. Highs in the low 90s for the 4th of July will climb to the mid 90s by Friday afternoon. Humidity will also be on the rise over the weekend, keeping the “feels like” temperature elevated. The area of high pressure that will help keep us dry Thursday and Friday will move deeper into the Atlantic by Saturday, opening the door for scattered sea breeze showers and storms in the afternoon.
