We’ve declared a First Alert Weather Day through midweek as a dangerous and prolonged heat wave intensifies across Eastern North Carolina. Extreme temperatures and stifling humidity will bring heat index values well above 105°, with some spots approaching or even exceeding 110° Monday through Wednesday. A Heat Advisory is in effect beginning 10 AM Monday through 10 AM Tuesday for much of the region.

We saw a nice dip in rain chances for Monday, but it won’t last. Less rain also caused the heat and humidity to be higher. A few waves of scattered showers and storms are expected overnight. These waves will impact different areas at different times, so keep radar handy. Some of the storms could linger late enough to affect the start of Tuesday. The coast has the best chance of seeing these storms. More redevelopment is expected through the afternoon and evening.

The weekend is here, and it’ll be a hot one. Temperatures will be near or in the 90s with a heat index as high as 100°F. Heat and humidity fuel storm chances late in the day both Saturday and Sunday. Storms like to cluster together this time of year, and it can be tough to pinpoint exactly where storms develop. Instead of staying inside and waiting for storms, keep your plans but be ready to find shelter from wind and lightning if storms do show up.

A typical June weekend is expected, but that comes with the threat of late-day storms. Before the storm threat, temperatures are expected to approach 90 degrees with a heat index near 100°F. Don’t cancel your plans, just be weather aware and keep your eyes on the radar through the evening. ENC is under a level 2 risk both Saturday and Sunday. The risk spans 14 states, so the chances of everyone seeing a storm seem low.

A coastal low brings the threat of heavy rain through ENC on Thursday. This is the same system being watched for tropical development by the NHC. Rain increases early Thursday morning and continues to spread northward through the day. Even with this system not expected to be tropical, it’ll bring a ton of tropical moisture with it. Downpours and rain bands will produce more rain than normal. Up to 1-3″ of rain will be possible across ENC.
