Bailey Sell, the owner and founder of Transfigure Print Co., says the LGBTQ+ inclusive screen-printing collective, is more than a business. GRAND RAPIDS, MI-- The largest winter festival in the U.S. kicked off for the sixth year in downtown Saturday evening. Festivalgoers packed into 555 Monroe Ave. NW along the Grand River to celebrate the start of World of Winter. DJ Adrian Butler got the crowd rocking as others warmed up by fire pits. Others watched as Ice Guru Events did a live ice carving of the Grand Rapids skyline.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – As families travel to visit relatives and friends this holiday season, the Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives (GRAAMA) hosted its annual Kwanzaa celebration in Grand Rapids on Saturday, Dec. 28. The museum hosted activities for kids, including author readings, cookie decorating, button making and more, followed by a formal Kwanzaa ceremony.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The South Christian Sailors and Hudsonville Eagles went head-to-head in Cornerstone University’s Holiday Classic girls basketball tournament at the Bernice Hansen Athletic Center in Grand Rapids on Saturday, Dec. 28. The top scorer for the Hudsonville Eagles was senior Josie Desmit (5) with 14 points in total, followed by junior Ryan Vanderbeek (20) with 10 points.

MUSKEGON, MI – The Coopersville Broncos and Whitehall Vikings went head-to-head in the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame Holiday Classic basketball tournament at Muskegon High School on Friday, Dec. 27. Whitehall senior Camden Thompson (23) scored the most points for the Vikings totaling 21. Followed by Whitehall senior Kal Koehler (14) with 18 points and Whitehall senior Brock Morningstar (24) with 9 points.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Mel Trotter Ministries continued an annual tradition Wednesday, hosting a free Christmas luncheon to hundreds in need in the Grand Rapids area. The nonprofit organization has been dedicated to combating hunger and homelessness for decades by providing vulnerable families and individuals with meals, shelter, and resources. Approximately 300 men, women, and children came to the event Wednesday, Dec. 18, at the ministry, 225 Commerce Ave. SW.

The ice rink at Rosa Parks Circle opened Friday, Dec. 6, just after winter made it’s holiday-season appearance with a snow storm and school closures. The downtown skating rink was supposed to open Thursday but that was pushed back because of bad weather. “We are excited to finally be able to take our four kids skating,” Stephanie Welch said. She and and her husband have skated downtown before but this is their first time bringing their kids.

DETROIT – Records have been shattered, the final trophy has been lifted, and eight Michigan high school football teams can call themselves this year’s state champions. The 2024 MHSAA football finals are over, but the legacy of the victors will live on. This year’s finals saw a series of pitched battles take place between Friday, Nov. 29 and Saturday, Nov. 30 that rewrote the state record book.
