The prosecution sees evidence of murder in the video that shows Terry McMillian, of Durham, pushing 82-year-old Gary Rasor to the ground at the Home Depot in Hillsborough on Oct. 18, 2022. Rasor broke several bones in the fall and died a month later. McMillian pleaded guilty to the murder of Rasor, voluntary manslaughter and common law robbery. He received a sentence of 97 to 123 months (8 to 10 years) and avoided life in prison.

A Morrisville man accused of killing his wife pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder on Monday and was sentenced to 13 to 16 years in prison. A judge accepted the plea deal for Michael Matthews, who was charged with the April 14, 2023, murder of his wife, 33-year-old Nabaruna Karmakar. Karmakar died from two gunshot wounds to the chest and torso at the couple's home on Seagrave Place in Morrisville, according to police.

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction on Thursday blamed employee error for the release of a convicted murderer who was quickly charged with another crime. Jonathan Santillan was originally sentenced to life without parole for his role in the 2013 deaths of Maria and Jose Mendoza. After he sought and got a reduction, his sentence was changed to up to 162 months in prison on an assault charge and to life with the possibility of parole on a first-degree murder charge.
