Parents took extra precautions at Rowandale School today after an attempted abduction of a 9-year-old on Monday. Police are investigating, urging anyone with information to call 105 with reference 250505/2064. School staff and police emphasised safety measures, with increased patrols and safety talks for pupils. Sam Fonohema usually drops his son off outside Rowandale School each weekday, watching from his car as the boy walks inside the school gates.

A bus has smashed into a tree on Elliot St, Pahurehure. Five people have been hospitalised after a school bus smashed into a tree in South Auckland. Police said others are being treated at the scene after the incident on Elliot St, Pahurehure, just before 9am. Photos from the scene show the front of the Auckland Transport bus with its windscreen completely smashed, wedged against a tree. The police spokesperson said all passengers were now off the bus and the vehicle was partially blocking the road.

Unemployment is expected to rise to 5.3%, the highest rate since 2016. Economists predict the peak is near, with young people, Māori, and Pasifika most affected. Recovery will take time, with improvements expected in the coming quarters. New data out today is expected to show unemployment is at its highest rate in almost a decade. Economists are predicting an unemployment rate of 5.3% based on data due to be released today from Stats NZ’s Household Labour Force Survey.
