    Kicking up the dust at this tiny outback town's annual rodeo at the weekend had never felt more important. Tales of dead livestock, helicopter rescues and flooded properties were told around Eromanga's arena, which was under water only a few weeks ago.  The community, 1,060 kilometres west of Brisbane, is one of many in the south-west picking up the pieces after raging floodwaters ripped through the land. Eromanga's Easter Rodeo came as a much-needed morale boost for its residents.

    An emergency warning is in place for Halifax in north Queensland, along the Herbert River in Hinchinbrook region, urging residents to take shelter now. A severe thunderstorm warning with heavy rain is in place for Townsville, Palm Island, Giru and Rollingstone in the north. Cardwell Gap had the highest rainfall overnight with 450 millimetres to 5am Thursday, while 267mm fell at Ingham and 226mm at Halifax.

    More than 300,000 homes in south-east Queensland are without power and many residents are also battling with patchy or non-existent phone service as wild weather continues to hit the region. The outages are the largest ever loss of power from a natural disaster in Queensland's history and residents should expect "prolonged outages" in the worst affected areas.

    In an unassuming Gold Coast unit complex Matt Slavin jokes around with one of the almost 100 young people he has helped out of homelessness since 2021. He manages the Gold Coast Youth Foyer — a highly sought after yet unorthodox housing service that is on the cusp of expansion across Queensland. "The hardships these young people have gone through, and their capacity, is mind-boggling," Mr Slavin said.
