Frustrations are growing over ongoing highway closures amid more flooding in North Queensland. The Queensland Trucking Association says its unacceptable that yet another Bruce Highway closure has cut off residents this morning. State and federal governments have pledged $300 million in early works to upgrade the Bruce Highway between Gympie and Innisfail.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred is now a category three system and continues to track south off the north Queensland coast. The cyclone's path beyond Saturday remains unclear but communities from central Queensland south are preparing for the worst. Residents and tourists at Great Keppel Island, near Rockhampton, will evacuate today, while in Bundaberg SES volunteers are mobilising.

After a wet night more rain is expected to fall on Far North Queensland and the coast today. A weak tropical low is moving away from the coast. Flood warnings remain in place for some areas. Heavy showers and thunderstorm activity have continued to hit parts of North Queensland as the Bureau of Meteorology monitors a tropical low off the coast. Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said some parts of the flood-stricken north tropical coast received up to 100 millimetres of rain overnight.

Several North Queensland rivers are flooding and warnings are in place from Tully to Ayr. A woman died today when an SES boat capsized in Ingham and thousands of people have been told to evacuate their homes. More heavy falls are forecast across parts of North Queensland that have already recorded more than 500 millimetres of rain in recent days. Heavy rain is forecast to continue drenching North Queensland for at least another day as thousands flee from floods that have already claimed a life.

More severe storms are predicted across the state today after 100km/h winds, large hail and storms hit parts of Queensland overnight. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind gusts up to 107km/h at Yeppoon on the Capricorn Coast while 6-8cm hail was reported in the Stanthorpe region. It comes after storms lashed southern, central and northern parts of the state overnight. Senior forecaster Miriam Bradbury said the "warm, stormy week" would continue into the weekend.
