UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County plans to build an autopsy center that will serve nine North Carolina counties. The facility, which will likely be built in Monroe, will be named the Southern Regional Autopsy Center. Union, Montgomery, Stanly, Cabarrus, Anson, Gaston, Moore, Richmond and Rowan counties will utilize the facility. It will be designed to alleviate the backlog of autopsies and toxicity tests in the state and speed up the time it takes to solve drug-related death investigations.

Western N.C. children killed when tree falls on home

BREVARD, N.C. — Two children are dead after a tree fell on their home. Joshua and Josiah Leviskia died Sunday morning. According to Connestee Fire Rescue, firefighters responded to a home in Brevard at 3:38 a.m. Firefighters found a large tree laying across the center of the home. Nathaniel Leviskia, the children’s father, said he, his wife and daughter were able to make it out of the home safely. Joshua, 11, and Josiah, 13, were trapped in their bedroom.
