Daily Postcard: Solitary Sandpiper Spotted In White Rock

Daily Postcard: This Solitary Sandpiper was seen May 2 at the pond behind the Water Treatment Plant in White Rock. According to All About Birds and the Audubon Society, these birds are robin-sized. They are also long distance migrants, breeding in Canada and Alaska but migrating, sometimes through parts of New Mexico, almost always to Central and South America and the Caribbean. Apparently, they migrate alone and mostly at night. They nest in bogs in arctic regions called ‘muskegs’.

DAVID KEITH HOLMES Oct. 27, 1962 – April 24, 2025David Holmes ended his journey on this earth with his family by his side after a hard-fought battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). David was 62 years young. David was born to Everett and Merlyn Holmes in Kearny, NJ. His family moved out west to New Mexico in 1966 when he was 4 years old. David graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1980 and went on to get his bachelor’s degree in Finance from New Mexico State University.

Concrete Barrier Wall Installation

COUNTY News:Beginning at 5 a.m., Saturday, May 3, Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets crews will install a concrete barrier wall along Trinity Drive, behind the sidewalk between 20th Street and Oppenheimer Drive, near Ashley Pond. Westbound traffic will be shifted into the left lane, and bicycle traffic will share the roadway. The barrier is being installed to enhance safety for attendees during special events at Ashley Pond.

ART News:Los Alamos High School junior Wren Hammond won the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for Teresa Leger Fernandez’s District 3. Wren’s artwork, “Celebrating Diversity the New Mexico Way,” will hang as part of the Congressional Exhibition of National Winners at the US Capitol in Washington DC for one year. Wren will travel to Washington DC for a ceremony honoring the national winners and will have a tour of the Capital including the exhibit.
