General Motors says that it plans to hire an unspecified number of temporary employees at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, assembly plant in the wake of a U.S. tariff on imported vehicles that took effect this week. The assembly plant in Fort Wayne manufactures the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. The Silverado is currently the only vehicle produced at a GM assembly plant in Oshawa that employs more than 3,000 people.

Premier Doug Ford says that he had a “very productive” conversation with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Wednesday night but received no assurances that any relief is coming from auto tariffs set to take effect next week. The call took place just before 11 p.m. and lasted for upwards of 25 minutes, Ford told reporters at Queen’s Park. During the phone call, Ford said that Lutnick outlined the contents of U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order announced just hours before.

An ongoing outbreak of measles in Ontario has been traced back to a large gathering in New Brunswick last fall that was attended by guests from Mennonite communities, the province’s top doctor says. Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore sent a memo to Ontario public health units on March 7 in which he revealed the connection to the New Brunswick gathering, particularly as it pertains to a rise in measles cases in southwestern Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says that U.S. representatives have indicated that they are planning to slap a “global tariff” on trading partners as of April 2, creating a need for Canada to shift its focus to making sure it is “first in line for exemptions.”

Some TTC bus riders could be asked for proof of payment starting next week as the TTC expand its fare enforcement program. The TTC says that in order to “maximize efficiency” the inspection will be carried out on bus platforms at integrated stations rather than on buses themselves. The commission says that customers “could be required to show proof-of-payment between exiting buses and entering the subway system” as of Monday.
