With hot weather expected this weekend as summer arrives, city officials remind residents there are a number of options to cool off in public places across Mississauga. Among the cooling-off choices is a visit to one of the city’s seven outdoor public swimming pools, which have just opened for the season. “Our outdoor pools are open. Take a cool dip and make a splash at one of the city’s outdoor pools on this hot weekend,” Mississauga officials said in a post to social media on Friday.

A woman who fell asleep while driving on a Mississauga highway on Friday wound up in a pond after losing control of the vehicle, police say. Ontario Provincial Police, who posted to social media several short videos of the vehicle being removed from the small body of water, said the woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after she and the vehicle ended up in the pond near highways 401 and 407. Police said the woman, described as being in her 20s, has been charged with careless driving.

A Mississauga councillor is floating an idea to build what would be the city’s first Olympic-sized swimming pool. Citing the city’s stated commitment to the health and wellness of residents and noting Mississauga is the largest city in Canada without a 50-metre indoor swimming pool, Ward 2 Coun. Alvin Tedjo wants to talk about bringing such a facility to the municipality.

Kids and older adults in Mississauga will soon be able to ride city transit buses for free — permanently. Starting July 1, children ages six-to-12 and adults ages 65-over can travel on MiWay buses free of charge, as long as they have a Presto card. The permanent free rides come as part of a new MiWay fee structure approved by City of Mississauga council last fall.

A Mississauga man faces more than a half dozen charges after an online chat led to an assault and robbery in Toronto, police say. The violent April 8 incident unfolded when a man met a person through social media and the two decided to meet in person, Toronto Police said in a news release on Friday. According to investigators, the man then “picked up the victim in his vehicle” in the Midland Avenue/Lawrence Avenue East area of Scarborough.
