Summer has arrived in Long Beach — at least if Friday night’s concert is anything to go by. Long Beach hosted its annual Summer Kickoff Concert on Friday night, May 23, at El Dorado Park West, with Pop Vinyl Band, Southern California’s premier dance band, entertaining attendees with a mix of pop, funk, soul, rock, Top 40 songs and Latin music.

The votes are in — and Long Beach’s youth participatory budgeting project is more popular than ever. Nearly 2,000 young people, from ages 12 to 26, cast ballots this year on which projects Long Beach should fund this summer, more than tripling last year’s participation, the city said in a recent press release. This is the city’s third annual youth participatory budgeting project, with 11 organizations slated to receive a combined $550,000 for varous community projects voted on by the city’s youth.
