Natural gas forward prices surged during the May 1-7 trading period as the market responded to summer heat popping up in forecasts and uncertainty in oil markets boosting price outlooks. June fixed prices for all North American hubs rose by an average 36.1 cents during the period, NGI’s Forward Look data show. The biggest price gains were seen in Appalachia, California, the Rockies, Southeast and in West Texas. Stanfield rose 54.1 cents week/week to $3.197 for June delivery.

Coterra Energy Inc. is upping its capital spend in the Marcellus Shale as it continues to see an improving natural gas outlook even as oil markets take a tumble. The company is lowering its overall 2025 capital budget by $100 million to a range of $2.0-2.3 billion. This is “driven by less oil-directed activity partially offset by higher natural gas-directed activity,” according to Coterra's first quarter earnings release.

Mexico natural gas imports of U.S. gas are up above the 7 Bcf/d mark, a figure usually seen in the hot summer months. “After kicking off May with some holiday-induced weakness, U.S.-to-Mexico pipeline exports are quickly catching up,” Wood Mackenzie analyst Ricardo Falcón told NGI.
