Mexico hit an all-time monthly high of imports of U.S. natural gas in May, and so far in June, flows have kept apace. U.S. pipeline exports to Mexico in May averaged 7.85 Bcf/d, up almost 500 MMcf/d versus May 2024, according to NGI calculations. “This may soon be eclipsed with the final June 2025 average monthly figure, which currently sits at 7.75 Bcf/d,” said NGI senior energy analyst Josiah Clinedinst.

Uncontrolled wildfires near Western Canada’s oilsands already curtailed some crude and natural gas production and could force further cutbacks as summer begins and a major new export project nears completion. A fire near Cold Lake in Alberta early this week forced employee evacuations and production pullbacks. Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., the country’s biggest oil and gas producer, evacuated workers from its Jackfish 1 oilsands project. This resulted in modest cuts to output.

While at generally healthy levels, natural gas storage in the Midwest held slightly below historical norms through late May. This left the heavy gas-consuming region vulnerable to any surges in summer cooling demand as well as overall competition, given robust demand for U.S. exports. The prospect of more widespread domestic heat in June and the culmination of spring maintenance at LNG terminals points to increased consumption in coming weeks.

Natural gas futures fell in early trading Wednesday after a failed breakout higher as physical market weakness drew attention away from hot summer forecasts. The July Nymex contract was trading down 3.7 cents to $3.685/MMBtu as of 8:31 a.m. ET. The July contract on Tuesday finished up 2.8 cents after a volatile session, extending Monday’s 24.7-cent rally. The early week rally solidified technical support and overcame weakness in next-day spot markets.
