A combination of steady production, moderating weather, eased export demand from Mexico and elsewhere, maintenance interruptions and injection limitations all intersected to strand supply in the Permian Basin and pummel prices in mid-April. While prices in the region have since recovered some ground, analysts say volatility likely lies ahead. NGI’s Waha daily cash price dropped into negative territory last Thursday (April 17) ahead of the Easter holiday weekend.

Houston-based Enstor Gas LLC has the green light to build and operate the Mississippi Hub Expansion in Simpson County, MS, with 33.5 Bcf more natural gas storage expected in 2028. Emerald Storage Holdings LLC, the parent company of Enstor and its subsidiary Mississippi Hub LLC, said Enstor was going ahead with the project after approvals from FERC. The expansion would add another 33.5 Bcf of salt dome natural gas storage to the facility with an expected in-service date in 2028.

The escalating trade war between China and the United States is shifting natural gas trade, according to import data, raising supply tensions and LNG price volatility. Market speculation has been swirling since February, when China retaliated against the Trump administration’s initial tariff threats with a 15% duty on U.S. natural gas exports. Since then, stakes have ratcheted up with China levying a 125% duty on goods from the United States and U.S. officials countering with a 145% tariff.

Mexico’s natural gas market has seen steady growth over the past decade, based mainly on imports of U.S. gas from South Texas into central and eastern Mexico. Mexico imported 6.418 Bcf/d of natural gas via pipeline from the United States on Monday, according to NGI calculations. Flows from California into Baja California were only a small fraction at 232 MMcf/d.
