Senate President Karen Spilka said she wants her chamber to approve a statewide ban on cellphones in public schools in the coming months in an attempt to put a proposal before Gov. Maura Healey before the start of the school year this fall. In an interview with the Herald, the Ashland Democrat argued cellphones are “causing severe hardship for our kids” because of the distraction the devices create and the ability for students to use them to cheat on schoolwork.
