HAZLETON - When the Hempfield and Hazleton baseball teams arrived at Schiavo Field for Monday's PIAA Class 6A opener, the facility was without power. No scoreboard. No public address announcing. The scoreboard flickered with life in the bottom of the second inning before cutting back out. Player introductions were staggered. The Black Knights and Cougars had to generate their own energy, shouting chants and cheers from the dugout while banging on the fence and standing on chairs.

Manheim Township’s Cole Stevens, and many of his fellow competitors, placed their hands on their heads in disbelief. Stevens, taking a few steps from the starting line of the PIAA Class 3A boys 800-meter run, waved his arms in the air to draw a reaction. May 28-SHIPPENSBURG - Pockets of people began lining the Seth Grove Stadium fence at Shippensburg University during Saturday's PIAA track and field championships. Some coaches - directing their field athletes - already reserved space, but a shift of gatherings was clearly visible. The starting official at the far end of the track signaled, "On your mark," and the crowd grew noticeably silent. Cheltenham's Amirah Nesmith was the favorite for the Class 3A girls 100-meter race.

SHIREMANSTOWN — A sense of urgency engulfed the Lampeter-Strasburg boys lacrosse team. The need to press the accelerator. To shift from first to second gear. The Pioneers trailed Trinity by five early in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s District Three Class 2A championship game. L-S’s offense was mired in a 21-minute stalemate. Passes weren’t connecting. Flow was lackluster. But when Grant Filius snapped the Pioneers’ cold spell with 8:45 remaining in regulation, L-S felt reinvigorated.
