Controversial bocce ball courts are OK’d

CEDARBURG — Despite opposition from neighbors and two commissioners, a majority of the Cedarburg Plan Commission on Monday gave the go for bocce ball courts at a wine bar on Portland Road. The Plan Commission approved a conditional use permit amendment for Sierzant to install two lanes for bocce ball, as well as lighting outside and amplified and ambient sound/music in the outdoor patio. It did not approve Sierzant’s request to use a shed adjacent to the outdoor seating area to serve alcohol.
Future of Woolen Mills Dam under discussion

CEDARBURG — Discussions and interest in Cedarburg’s dams have resurfaced recently. The council directed City Administrator Mikko Hilvo last week to provide a clear cost at its June meeting for a feasibility study on potentially removing the Cedarburg Woolen Mills Dam. The base proposal cost the council was given last week was estimated at $27,966, with optional tasks totaling an additional $17,105 if all are pursued.

Cedarburg Light & Water Utility creates new recycling program

CEDARBURG — The Cedarburg Light & Water Utility has developed a new recycling program in replacement of its appliance and electronics recycling events. CL&W General Manager Karsten Huse said the vendor the utility used for the recycling events was no longer offering the same service and CL&W decided to try something new this year. "This new year-round program offers a more convenient and accessible option for our customers," Huse said.
Cedarburg council rejects extended pedal tavern route down Portland Road

CEDARBURG — The Cedarburg Common Council denied a new route to a downtown pedal tavern that would have brought it to Sierzant on Portland Road. North 48, a bar at W62N599 Washington Ave., has been operating a pedal tavern through downtown Cedarburg for several years. A request came to the council last week to add Sierzant, a wine bar at N49W5471 Portland Road, as a stop on the pedal tavern’s route.
New book discusses history of Cedarburg drum and bugle corps

CEDARBURG — A Cedarburg native wrote a book about the formation and history of the former drum and bugle corps and color guard group, the Thunderbolts. "The Thunderbolts 1953 1993" by John Schoenknecht is available for purchase at the Cedarburg History Museum. "There are many people in Cedarburg who remember the Thunderbolts — whether they marched, or they remember hearing the group practice during summer nights or they saw the group in parades and competitions," Schoenknecht said.

CEDARBURG — Though the Cedarburg Plan Commission has yet to officially make a recommendation, the mayor and the three other commissioners said they do not want apartments at the site on highways 60 and I. The Plan Commission directed City Planner Mary Censky to create a new land use classification for Smart Growth Area 11 that would be a mixed use of commercial and/or high-medium density residential. SGA 11 is located on the southeast corner of Highway 60 and Sheboygan Road.

City, town of Cedarburg look at Highway 60 traffic study

CEDARBURG — Officials from the city and town of Cedarburg met during a city Plan Commission meeting Monday to review a traffic and access planning study for along Highway 60. The city of Cedarburg is currently working on updating its Comprehensive Plan Smart Growth Land Use Plan, and it was determined that the city should gather an analysis for traffic/transportation implications. The study, conducted by raSmith, was jointly commissioned by the city and town.
Mequon couple takes on historic Washington House Inn

CEDARBURG — New owners Christine and Jeff McLean of the Washington House Inn see themselves as stewards continuing to preserve the history of the inn and maintaining its legacy in the community. The Mequon couple purchased the boutique hotel, which includes three buildings and the historic Schroeder House, from Jim Pape and his business partners in December last year.
