Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg published many of the text messages in a story posted online Monday. Goldberg wrote that he did not know why he had been added to the conversation, which he said took place with “shocking recklessness.” The National Security Council said in a statement to the magazine that the thread appeared to be authentic. The magazine elected not to publish the most sensitive messages, which contained specific operational plans.

The price of eggs has risen by nearly 50 percent in the Boston area since the fall, data show, driven by a deadly bird flu outbreak adding to already-high prices all over the supermarket. More than 150 million birds have been killed by the avian flu since January 2022 across the United States, with farmers culling infected flocks in an attempt to contain the damage.

To put that number into context, the city of Boston is made up of about 48 square miles of land area, and the borough of Manhattan is about 23 square miles. The largest blaze — the Palisades Fire — has burned about 37 square miles and is just 17 percent contained as of Tuesday morning.
