Asked to be a better neighbor, Chevron has agreed to be more transparent in reporting off-site pollution, to file quarterly reports about it, and to engage the Richmond community on how it can better present pollution data. The Bay Area Air District said Tuesday Chevron is the first of the area’s five refineries to agree to be more transparent in measuring pollutants near its property lines. The refineries don’t have a good track record with the monitoring program.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District board welcomed Cheryl Cotton, a former WCCUSD student, teacher, principal and administrator, back to the district Wednesday, naming her superintendent. In a unanimous vote, with Cinthia Hernandez absent, the board approved a three-year contract for Cotton at $325,000 a year, with a provision for $3,000 increases in the second and third years, contingent on her performance. She will start the job on June 20.

A day after outgoing Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell delivered a farewell address, the Oakland Unified School District announced Friday that former Chabot Elementary School Principal Denise Saddler will serve as interim superintendent for the next school year. The shift comes less than a year after the School Board extended Johnson-Trammell’s contract and a month after the board abruptly ended it in a 4-3 closed-session vote.

The Oakland Unified School District named a building Wednesday in honor of Superintendent Dr. Marcus A. Foster, the district’s first Black leader, who was assassinated in 1973. The new administration building at 1011 Union St., which opened in February, now carries the name of the superintendent who was killed by members of the radical Symbionese Liberation Army in November 1973, just months before the group kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst in Berkeley.

Former Congresswoman Barbara Lee officially became the 52nd mayor of Oakland during a swearing in ceremony at City Hall on May 20. Lee, 78, was introduced by a pairing of business and labor — Barbara Leslie, CEO of the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, and Keith Brown, executive secretary-treasurer of the Alameda Labor Council.
